چکیده

A theory of the resonance Stark effect data reported in part 1 (preceding paper in this issue) is developed. The model used involves a weak charge resonance interaction between the excited state of an electron donor *D and a vibronically broad charge-separated state D+A-, where A is an electron acceptor. The theory predicts a series of unusual higher order Stark line shapes depending primarily on the driving force for electron transfer. These line shapes closely resemble the series of line shapes reported in part 1 for the BL absorption band of several reaction center variants. Analysis of the trends leads to the conclusion that the novel Stark line shapes are due to coupling between the BL and BLHL states. Analysis of the higher order Stark data gives information on the driving force and rates for the BL f BLHL electron-transfer reaction in this series of variants. The rate of this reaction in wild-type reaction centers is about 1 order of magnitude slower than energy transfer from BL to the special pair as the driving force is quite small; however, it becomes much faster when the driving force is larger, as in the (M)Y210F mutant. Quantitative information is extracted on the rates, relative driving force, and electronic coupling for this process. These results have implications for the mechanism of the primary charge-separation reaction (one-step vs two-step electron transfer) and the origins of unidirectional electron transfer. The experimental method and method of analysis should be generally applicable to any excited-state electron-transfer reaction.

Probing Excited-State Electron Transfer by Resonance Stark Spectroscopy. 1. Experimental Results for Photosynthetic Reaction Centers

Higher order Stark spectroscopy has recently been introduced and applied to characterize the electrooptic properties of chromophores in bacterial photosynthetic reaction centers.1 In the course of these studies, an unusually large and broad higher order Stark effect with a novel line shape was discovered in the region of the monomeric bacteriochlorophyll absorption band. The origin of this new ...

Experimental studies of light-induced charge transfer and charge redistribution in (X(2)-bipyridine)Re(I)(CO)(3)Cl complexes.

Stark emission spectroscopy, transient DC photoconductivity (TDCP), and ground-state dipole moment measurements have been used to evaluate charge transfer (CT) within various (X(2)-bipyridine)Re(I)(CO)(3)Cl complexes following (3)MLCT excited-state formation. The Stark technique reports on vector differences between ground-state (mu(g)) and excited-state (mu(e)) dipole moments, while TDCP, when...

Dynamics of forced autoionization

In this Rapid Communication we report on the autoionization dynamics of the 5d7d doubly excited state in barium in a static electric field. The different experiments and theory show Stark beatings in the autoionization process. Also it appears that the total spin of the two valence electrons plays a major role in the ionization dynamics. Absorption spectroscopy revealed the ionization dynamics ...

Photoinduced electron transfer in 2-tert-butyl-3-(anthracen-9-yl)-2,3-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane.

Intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer from a hydrazine unit to an aromatic group is studied by resonance Raman spectroscopy and electronic absorption spectroscopy. Substituted hydrazine functional groups have played an important role in studies of electron-transfer reactions, photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer, and of mixed valence. A prototypical compound, 2-tert-butyl-3-(an...

Probing electron transfer dynamics of pyranine with reduced graphene oxide.

A stable reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser Raman spectroscopy. Steady state and time-resolved fluorescence quenching studies have been carried out to elucidate the process of electron transfer from excited pyranine (POH) into the rGO dispersion. POH adsorbed strongly on rGO dispersion with an apparent association constant of 33.4 (m...
